My Philosophy in Art Education

Nurturing enthusiasm, creativity, and continuous learning in a positive self-respecting classroom where students are allowed to take risks will create motivation for life long learning. Working in a non-stressful, creative environment helps students learn because they are open to new ideas as they enjoy what they are doing. By maintaining a safe, structured environment, supporting diversity acceptance, and recognizing individual abilities, students can have a balanced and successful learning experience. As an educator, I will use best practices to see that students learn to their full potential and become well rounded, life-long learners.

I believe that a balanced teaching style that offers organization, procedures, and flexibility are necessary when dealing with the unpredictability of the daily classroom environment. While structure and safety are necessary, children’s experiences in school should also be positive, encouraging, and enjoyable. By giving students the necessary knowledge and tools to actively explore their creativity allows them freedom to make mistakes and learn constructively.  With the right tools, guidance, and freedom of creativity students can learn their place in the world without the fear of failure.

In order to proceed in the future it is important for students to know the historical and cultural diversities of the past. Art has played a role in every culture on Earth and has been a key component of discovering historical facts. In art, students become more aware of the modern world around them by looking at the past through visual art and artifacts and then connecting them to their own experiences. Exploring student diversity opens the doors to unique thoughts and empathy in the classroom. Visual culture is a way of fostering individuality in students, giving them the freedom to express themselves in their own unique way.

I understand that each student is an individual and that they take in and process information in different ways. As Howard Gardener suggests, some students learn by reasoning logically, listening, visualizing, or through physical activities to name a few. I differentiate my instruction by offer a variety of learning opportunities to develop all learning preferences such as: visual presentations, demonstrations, group collaboration, experimentation and discovery, self expression, and reflection. I also believe it is important to implement interdisciplinary art lessons. By applying cross-curricular content involving literature, science, social studies, and math students make connections to all areas of learning. As an educator, it is my responsibility to teach creativity in a way that enhances student’s overall learning potential.
